Using the Wiimote to control the HTPC

September 3, 2008 · Filed Under How-To Guides

I came across this great article on lifehacker about how you can control your HTPC with your wiimote!

The thing is, the wiimote (as well as the balance board that comes with wii fit) use Bluetooth, so you can connect them to your computer.

wiimote htpcCheck it out. You can control windows media centre using your wiimote. With a bit more work, this can be gotten to work on Linux or a Mac too.

This means you can do all sorts of cool things, including playing emulated games using your nun chuck or classic controller on your TV.

It also means you can control your HTPC with your wiimote using the buttons. If you convert a sensor bar to connect to your HTPC it can also use pitch. This is really cool as you can just point and click at things (like you do on the wii) and control your HTPC in a really awesome looking way (and you don’t have to fork out the extra money for another remote).

It may take a bit of fiddling to get it all working, but once you have it all done it will be way worth it.

Now I just have to convince the family that I won’t be breaking the HTPC doing this. It’s become such an integral part of our Home Theatre System, no one trusts me to risk it anymore (I paid and built the HTPC, I should be able to risk it however I like :P)
